The artist
Chengju Li李成举
Founder of Territory Painting, a representative artist of Maximalism, and an artist recognized in both China and the United States across a 45-year career. His works are sold through multiple galleries in Manhattan.
Born in 1966 in Liaoning, China, Chengju Li entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1984 and later studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He developed Territory Painting, a method that builds a portrait from drawing, collage and color composition until the subject's whole world fits inside one canvas. In 2019 the theory was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.
He founded UNAA ART, teaches art to young people, and is at work on “Witnessing Glory”, a series planned at 777 paintings.
Territory Painting maps a life, a family's history, or a century of change, the way a map charts the world.
The method takes its inspiration from the Earth's six great tectonic plates. A color composition is laid down first as the ground, like continents; layers of drawing, collage and rich surface texture are then built over it, until people, places, dates and symbols settle into one living territory.
These are works with real collectible value. Chengju Li's paintings have been sold through several Manhattan galleries at prices from $3,000 to more than $10,000, and he now has art museums in both Manhattan and Rhode Island.
